The Search Engine Optimization or SEO, after Penguin update from Google really changed the landscape of Internet marketing. It completely eliminated the old techniques used by article writers to help a website or webpage climb up to its rankings.
As a result of this shock wave, many link building sites that offer ways of sending other websites into the top of Google pages have closed down such as, the (in)famous BuildMyRank or BMR. BMR used to be the top choice to rake up the necessary factors to cause a website to appear on the top list of Google.
However, the changes caused it to close down, which came as a surprise to many. The sudden closure of BMR caused a chain reaction to other businesses also that invested in it, especially the ones whose services heavily lie in writing SEO articles.
What Is Google Penguin?
Google Penguin is an algorithm update by Google, Inc. This aims to level the playing field of websites in its search engines. It was announced on April 24, 2012, and by the time it went live, it immediately made ripples in the online community. It is a predecessor to Google Panda that was released in February 2011.
The prevalence of numerous websites that went against the guidelines of Google led to this measure. Before, there were many websites on top of its rankings that employ black-hat SEO techniques, which rendered the pages of its search engine vulnerable to irrelevant information.
Black-hat SEO techniques involves participation in link schemes, stuffing of keywords in articles, purposely creating duplicate contents, cloaking and others. Websites using black-hat techniques served as a very big problem to this company especially to its clients who wanted to extract relevant data according to their needs.
Clients would spend time looking for the right website or webpage to cater to their needs because the ones in the top rankings are not usually the ones that offer it. This also presented a problem to websites that offer the right services and relevant information because they are overshadowed by others with less relevant contents.
With this move by Google, black-hat websites were penalized by being downgraded in the rankings. This gave way for legitimate websites that offer significant information and services to climb up in its rankings.
Statistics Of Google Penguin Update
Based on the estimation of Google, an average of 3% queries in English, Chinese, Arabic and German languages were affected together with other languages that are more prone to be spammed. Then when Penguin 1.1 was released, which was another update in May 25, 2012, around 0.1% of English searches were affected.
The Aftermath Of Google Penguin
Days after its release, almost every business that provides black-hat SEO and the ones that are dependent or with links to the services of BMR, immediately froze their operations.
Black-hat operators and writers immediately sought for new alternatives or ways to once again exploit this update to their favor.But this time, Google closely guarded the elements or factors used by their latest update to safeguard it from abuse.
The good thing about it, is that writers or web owners now turn to white-hat SEO which is more informative and reliable in nature. This technique is more inclined in educating a website’s clients or its readers, unlike its counterpart that only aims to satisfy the personal gains of website owners.
The SEO after Penguin brought about a positive change in the Internet landscape. The obvious winners of this are the website owners, writers or moderators who work at their best to provide quality content, as well as the people who surf the net everyday in search of a reliable information or service to address their needs.
